Ocean Sounds with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra: 1:00 - 2:00 pm Level 3 Atrium Two members of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra will perform, demonstrate and provide a hands-on experience with music and sounds from the ocean. Nature Nook: 1:00 - 4:00 pm Level 3 Atrium Visit volunteers from Nature NL at our Nature Nook to feel pelts, bones and feathers and ask your questions about our province's wild plants, animals and spaces. Whale Release and Strandings: 1:00 - 4:00 pm Level 3 Atrium Join volunteers from the Whale Release and Strandings Group and help them put together a life-size whale puzzle with real whale bones. Giant Squid: 2:00 - 4:00 pm Tom and Susan (Kent) Foran classroom Make your own giant squid with great big googley-eyes. It's a great way to find out how the real animal is put together, from tentacles to tail fin. Canada C3: Coast to Coast to Coast: 2:30 -3:15 pm - Theatre, A special screening This acclaimed documentary film follows the historic 150-day, 25,000 km expedition which sailed Canada's coastline, from Toronto, Ontario to Victoria, British Columbia via the Northwest Passage. A signature project for Canada's 150th Anniversary of Confederation, the inspiring journey explored Canada?s past, present and future.

How do place, identity, and art intersect, and what do their points of intersection tell us about this place we call home?

In this talk, Rhea Rollmann will explore the significance of queer and trans art in Atlantic Canada with particular emphasis on the work of Erica Rutherford as well as iterations of queer and trans art in NL. There will be an opportunity for questions after the talk.

About the Presenter:

Rhea Rollmann (she/her) is an award-winning journalist, writer and audio producer based in St. John's, NL, and is the author of A Queer History of Newfoundland (Engen Books, 2023). She is a founding editor of The Independent NL and her journalism has appeared in Briarpatch Magazine, CBC, Xtra Magazine, Chatelaine, PopMatters, Riddle Fence, Macleans and more. Her academic work has been published in the Journal of Gender Studies, Labor Studies Journal, Canadian Woman Studies, Journal of Work and Society, Canadian Theatre Review, Canadian Review of Sociology, Screen Bodies and elsewhere. She also has an extensive background in labour organizing and queer/trans activism, and she is Station Manager at CHMR-FM, a community radio station in St. John's.
