Art Lecture

Dr. Gerard Curtis, Professor of Visual Culture and Art History at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University, will guide us through the art historical references embedded within Adad Hannah’s exhibitionGlints and Reflections.

Adad Hannah's “living pictures” (also known as “tableaux vivants”) play with the fascinated and attentive eye of the spectator by using dynamic modes of expression such as photography, video, installation and performance to generate the still image. This exhibition brings together key works made in the past decade that focus on his enduring interest in the photographic image in relation to personal and social histories.

Dr. Curtis has published a number of articles and book reviews on 19th and 20th century art, literary culture and maritime art, along with a book on word/image studies. He is currently engaged in a book-length study on issues in maritime/environmental art. Dr. Curtis’ studio-art practice works with traditional and time-based media, including video, film, installation and performance art. He has exhibited in Canada and the UK. In 2009, Dr. Curtis was awarded the Memorial University President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching, and in 2012 he received a Canadian Association of University Teachers Service Award. He is also a union and environmental activist.
