Opening Reception
You are invited to join us for a free public art gallery opening reception!
The exhibition Nicholas Aiden: Otherside, is the artist’s empowered reimagining of an experience of personal alienation, transforming a public space into a queer interior. Under the familiar glow of lampshades-as-mushrooms lie personally sacred objects and items of the artist’s clothing transforming the shambolic scene of the fairy dance into an intimate, inviting place. This is a metaphor for joyful rebellion, a safe space for queer expression where we can experience a deeper sense of ourselves and our common humanity.
Double Vision: Jessie Oonark, Janet Kigusiuq, Victoria Mamnguqsualuk profiles three groundbreaking artists from Nunavut—Jessie Oonark (1906-1985) and her daughters, Janet Kigusiuq (1926-2005) and Victoria Mamnguqsualuk (1930-2016). It looks at the matriarchal practice of Oonark and her daughters, and how women artists in Qamani`tuaq mentored one another in producing unique aesthetic and conceptual lineages.
There will be refreshments and a cash bar 19+. Admission to the Art Gallery exhibitions will be free during the event.
