Film Screening and Talk: Skin for Skin: Art and Process

Date: Jul 29
2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Where: Theatre

Join film directors, Carol Beecher and Kevin Kurynik for a behind-the-scenes account of the story and visual development of the award-winning animated short Skin for Skin.

Skin for Skin is a dark allegory of greed and spiritual reckoning during the early days of the Canadian fur trade. With nods to Melville and Coleridge, directors Carol Beecher and Kevin D.A. Kurytnik have created a visually stunning contemporary myth. In 1823, the Governor of the largest fur-trading company in the world travels across his Dominion, extracting ever-greater riches from the winter bounty of animal furs. In his brutal world of profit and loss, animals are slaughtered to the brink of extinction – until the balance of power shifts, and the forces of nature exact their own terrible price. Produced with the National Film Board of Canada North West Studio.

About the Film Directors:

Having been intimately involved with the animation community in Alberta for almost 30 years Carol Beecher has gathered in-depth knowledge and experience that encompass production in traditional and digital 2D and 3D modes, non-profit programming and administration, and post-secondary teaching and curricular development.  She is a voracious consumer of books and documentaries on filmmaking, production design, biographies, storytelling, and film and animation aesthetics, and thinks of herself as a life-long learner.

Kevin Kurytnik is dedicated to both facets of his animation career, as a conscientious teacher and mentor specializing in visual storytelling, and as a professional independent animator. Both of these facets feed each other, with his professional practice providing experiences and resources to share with students, and teaching exposing him to fresh ideas and approaches. Kevin has been fortunate to be able to share the world of animation and storytelling with many people, working with everyone from preschoolers to grandparents.

In 1994 they formed Fifteen Pound Pink Productions, named thus because that’s how much their cat weighed. They are currently developing an animated feature film (You WERE Here), and a short film based on the Ursula K. Le Guin short story The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.

This program is presented in partnership with Memorial University Department of English.
