Join Vuelo Directo and special guests for an evening of Spanish and Latin American music: historical songs of loneliness, exile, and hope.
This live multimedia experience of Spanish and Latin American protest songs, revolution anthems, and sung poetry provides a unique opportunity to learn about the dramatic events that shaped the history of these peoples in the 20th century.
Dr Myriam Osorio, Associate Professor of Spanish at Memorial University will MC the evening’s program. Dr. Osorio will provide the story and historical and cultural significance behind the songs.

About the Performers:
Vuelo Directo Basico is the scaled-down acoustic version (the "basico" version) of Vuelo Directo, a pop-rock band based in St John’s that covers Spanish language hits from the last few decades. The core trio consists of Bill Tizzard, drums and percussion, Pete Verdin on bass, and Rober Martínez-Espiñeira (vocals and classical/acoustic guitars). The trio play covers in a range of styles, such as folk, pop-rock, flamenco fusion, and rumba, by a variety of artists and bands from Spain and Latin America
Maia McKeown
Maia has been enjoying music and performing since a very young age. Maia has performed at The Rooms and at the St. John's Farmers Market. She currently sings with The Shallaway Youth Choir. Maia was awarded 2022 Youth of the Year by the City of St. John's.
Cristina Hernandez
Cristina Hernandez is a Mexican folk singer and songwriter. She studied music for five years at Fermatta Music Academy and has been part of the music industry since 2009. In Mexico, she performed at different cultural venues like Festival del Libro, Día de Muertos, and Festival de las Almas. She relaunched her musical career in St. John’s performing and premiering her new song “Flowers in the Wind” for the “Multicultural Women’s Organization” on “International Women’s Day”. She was nominated for the 2022 Global Music Artist of the Year for Music NL. Cristina Hernandez’s music project consists of an international fusion of different cultures and traditions with a particular emphasis on Latin American genres. Her musical proposal offers experiences in different languages and collaborations with a multicultural approach. From Mexican folk to electronic dance music (EDM), Cristina composes and performs for the pleasure of listening, expressing emotions, and acting toward solving social issues and raising awareness on important topics in everyday life.
Noel Gutierrez
Noel Gutierrez Quintana is a young Cuban guitarist, composer and music producer. Since his beginnings, the guitar has been an indispensable tool to make music. His career have been influenced by Classical music, Flamenco, and Jazz. He has participated in several tours as a performer in the Dominican Republic, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece and the United States.
