In celebration of International Women’s Day, Marian Frances White shares experiences and stories from her lengthy career.

About the Presenter:

Marian Frances White is an award-winning author, poet, and filmmaker. Her first published works include ten editions of “A Woman’s Almanac: Voices of Newfoundland and Labrador Women” (1987 – 1992), “Not A Still Life”, a biographical book about artist Rae Perlin, published in 1994, and “Skinny Dipping”, a book of poetry released in 1997. Marian’s films have received awards and critical acclaim in Canada and the United States. In 2000, she released “The Untold Story of the Suffragists”, followed by “Stealing Mary: Last of the Red Indians” (2005), the documentary, “Tricksters” that takes viewers to northern Innu communities in Labrador, and “Circus by Komatik” (2019) a documentary about Inuit children in Labrador who get involved with Wonderbolt Circus. In 2023, Marian received the YWCA Circle of Distinction Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Stroll across land and sea, and through time, to meet the peoples who have made Newfoundland and Labrador home for the past 9,000 years.

Each tour is approximately 30 – 40 minutes and is included in the cost of admission. Free for Rooms members.

An advance peek of our new exhibition Erica Rutherford: Her Lives and Works with visiting curator Pan Wendt.

Most recently presented at the National Gallery of Canada, Erica Rutherford: Her Lives and Works surveys the fascinating and multifaceted career of Erica Rutherford (b. Edinburgh, 1923 – d. Charlottetown, 2008), the first Prince Edward Island artist to be featured at the prestigious Venice Biennale.

Rutherford’s work explores themes of persona and gender, home and landscape, and her life was shaped by the search for identity and community. The exhibition includes over 100 works, accompanied by memorabilia and photographs. The exhibition opens to the public on November 21, 2025.
