Dr. Karen Lawford presents the context of Indigenous birthworkers and how they are related to Indigenous futures. But first, she describes the historical socio-political context of healthcare in the country of Canada referencing various Calls to Action, Calls to Justice, and Recommendations from three national commissions. One of the goals of this presentation is to make evident the truth so that together, we can begin a path towards reconciliation.

The Indigenous Speaker Series is a platform that facilitates conversations about Indigenous identity, resurgence, linguistic reclamation, and belonging, featuring prominent Indigenous scholars, artists, storytellers, and activists from across Turtle Island.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Lawford is an Anishinaabeg midwife (Namegosibiing, Lac Seul First Nation, Treaty 3), a Registered midwife (Ontario), and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University. Her health systems research focuses on comprehensive, gender-inclusive sexual and reproductive healthcare for Indigenous Peoples. Her research interests include Maternity care on reserves, Medical evacuation, Midwifery, Indigenous feminist and queer theories and methodologies, Indigenous women and Two Spirit Leadership, Indigenous health and wellness, and Health care. She was the 2020 Indspire Laureate in Health for her research and policy work on mandatory evacuation for birth. In 2021, she became a College Member of the Royal Society of Canada. 

The series is presented by Memorial University Department of Anthropology in partnership with The Rooms.

Come listen to the stories of the Great Auk, the Newfoundland Wolf, and Endangered Whales as they echo across the ages through their body and bones. Commiserate with the extinct, heed the calls of the endangered, hold ossified bones, and see how artists transform tragedy into hope for a sustainable future.

Join us at The Rooms for an inspiring two-hour drawing class designed specifically for teens. Whether you’re a budding artist or just curious about exploring your artistic interests, this class is perfect for you!

What to Expect:

Our experienced instructor will guide you through fundamental drawing techniques, from line work to shading. Each session focuses on a different theme, from drawing the harbor view to capturing the details of our natural history collection.

This fun and relaxed atmosphere is a place for teens to meet fellow teen artists, share ideas, and enjoy a supportive environment.

Materials Provided: High-quality drawing supplies will be provided.
