In celebration of the Year of the Arts, Gather honours the vital role of artists in Newfoundland and Labrador. The exhibition places importance on intergenerational conversations, as artworks by some of the province’s most beloved figures are shown alongside recent and newly commissioned works by contemporary artists. It highlights the province’s growing creative community, marked by close-knit ties and a strong sense of place. Ultimately, "Gather" speaks to the various reasons we come together with others, whether in celebration, remembrance, or solidarity.
Clouds and fog are familiar sights in this part of the world, but with Max Streicher: Alto Cumulus, clouds take on a new dimension. The large-scale inflatable artworks transform the gallery space, offering a unique perspective on tension, deflation, and vulnerability. Influenced by art history and surrealist aesthetics, Streicher's pieces challenge perceptions of space and reality, capturing the essence of his childhood fascination with the ever-changing nature of clouds.
BURNOUT is a new immersive installation created by Elbow Room Artists-in-Residence Georgia Dawkin and Drew Pardy (HOT 4 THE MOMENT). Through textiles, video, and performance, the artists examine racing culture and terminology. Their playful critique explores how burnout and unrecognized labour are common experiences for many women and creative workers.
There will be refreshments, a cash bar (19+), and live music by Brad Jefford. Admission to the Art Gallery exhibitions will be free during the event.

More about the New Orford Quartet
The New Orford String Quartet has seen astonishing success, giving annual concerts for national CBC broadcast and receiving unanimous critical acclaim, including two Opus Awards for Concert of the Year, and a 2017 JUNO Award for Best Classical Album. Recent seasons have featured return engagements in Chicago, Montreal, and Toronto, as well as their New York City debut on Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series.
The New Orford is dedicated to promoting Canadian works, both new commissions and neglected repertoire from the previous century. New Orford String Quartet projects have included performances of major Canadian string quartets from the 20th century including works by Glenn Gould, Sir Ernest MacMillan, Jacques Hétu, R. Murray Schafer, and Claude Vivier, as well as commissions of new works from composers such as Francois Dompierre, Gary Kulesha, Airat Ichmouratov and Tim Brady. The Quartet thrives on exploring the rich chamber music repertoire; recent collaborations include those with pianists Marc-André Hamelin and Menahem Pressler.
